BYD saw another record month of new energy vehicle (NEV) sales, albeit at a slower rate.

The Chinese NEV giant continued to see growth in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales last month, while plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales were down slightly from October.

Its overseas sales were essentially flat from October, but also a record high.

November performance

BYD sold 301,903 NEVs in November, up 31.02 percent year-on-year and essentially flat from October’s 301,833 units, according to data it released today.

The company ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, switching to focus on production of PHEVs and BEVs.

BYD’s NEVs include passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles, with sales of passenger NEVs up 31.07 percent to a record 301,378 units in November, essentially unchanged from 301,095 units in October.

BYD’s commercial NEVs sold 525 units in November, up 8.25 percent year-on-year but down 28.86 percent from October.

Among passenger NEVs, BEVs sold 170,150 units in November, up 49.37 percent year-on-year and up 2.81 percent from October.

BYD sold 131,228 units of passenger PHEVs in November, up 13.1 percent year-on-year while down 3.22 percent from October.

In November, BYD sold a record 30,629 NEVs in overseas markets, up 148.65 percent year-on-year and essentially flat from 30,521 in October.

The company first announced its overseas sales figures for NEVs in July 2022.

In addition to being China’s largest NEV company, BYD is also China’s second-largest power battery maker.

BYD’s installed capacity of power and energy storage batteries amounted to about 16.945 GWh in November, up 54 percent year-on-year and up 10.85 percent from October.

Year-to-date performance

In the January-November period, BYD sold 2,683,374 NEVs, up 64.8 percent year-on-year.

BYD aims to sell at least 3 million vehicles this year and strives to reach 3.6 million, the company’s chairman and president Wang Chuanfu said in late March.

That means BYD will reach its 3 million target by selling about 317,000 NEVs in December.

BYD sold 2,672,728 passenger NEVs in the January-November period, up 64.7 percent year-on-year.

It sold 10,646 commercial NEVs in the January-November, up 93 percent year-on-year.

BYD sold 1,384,068 passenger BEVs in the January-November, up 73.18 percent year-on-year.

It sold 1,288,660 passenger PHEVs in the January-November, up 56.47 percent year-on-year.

BYD sold 206,670 overseas NEVs in the January-November.

In January-November, BYD’s installed base of power and energy storage batteries amounted to about 133.163 GWh, a year-on-year increase of 69.24 percent.
