BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) plans to build an electric vehicle (EV) plant in Cambodia, the Southeast Asian nation’s Prime Minister Hun Manet said.

Hun Manet said today on the X platform that he met with Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD’s Asia-Pacific auto sales division, and shared several pictures.

BYD’s plant in Cambodia will be able to assemble 20,000 vehicles a year for the local market and export to international markets, Hun Manet said.

BYD entered the Cambodian market in 2020 and opened its first passenger car sales center in Phnom Penh, introducing several new energy vehicle (NEV) models.

In August 2022, BYD launched the Atto 3 in Cambodia, a model known in China as the Yuan Plus.

In Southeast Asia, BYD already has a factory.

On July 4, BYD opened its Thailand plant, where the company saw its 8 millionth NEV roll off the production line.

The Thai plant, which has an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, is BYD’s first wholly owned overseas passenger car plant and its first in Southeast Asia.

In addition, BYD plans to build a plant in Indonesia.

BYD plans to invest $1.3 billion in Indonesia to build a plant with a capacity of 150,000 vehicles, Indonesia’s Chief Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto said in January.

On March 19, Luhut Panjaitan, coordinating minister of maritime affairs and investment, said in a post on his Instagram account that BYD planned to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the factory in Indonesia in July.

BYD had shown great enthusiasm for investing in Indonesia and aimed to have the manufacturing plant start commercial production in the country by early 2026, Panjaitan said.
