Tesla has begun trial production at the factory, which produces energy storage products and is expected to start mass production in early 2025.
Tesla’s (NASDAQ: TSLA) Megafactory in Shanghai, which produces energy storage products, has completed construction, just seven months after it began construction in May, state-run Xinhua News Agency said in a report today.
The Megafactory has begun trial production and is expected to start mass production in early 2025, the report said, citing sources at Tesla China.
The factory is located near Tesla’s vehicle assembly plant in Lingang, Shanghai, and Xinhua’s report was accompanied by two images showing its overall architecture.
Construction began May 23 on the Megafactory, which is Tesla’s first energy storage project outside its US home market.
Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group became the first customer in China for the factory’s product, Megapack, and signed a contract with Tesla for the first orders at the groundbreaking ceremony in May.
Tesla’s energy storage products include Powerwall, Powerpack and Megapack. The Shanghai Megafactory mainly produces Megapack, an ultra-large commercial energy storage battery, for the global market.
The Megafactory was expected to go into production in the first quarter of 2025, and Megapack production would be as high as 10,000 units per year, with nearly 40 GWh of energy storage, Tesla previously said.
The Megapack is a powerful battery that stores energy and supplies it, helping to stabilize the grid and prevent power outages. A total of 40 GWh of power is enough to power 50,000 homes in Shanghai for a year.
Each Megapack unit can store more than 3 MWh of energy, enough to power 3,600 homes for an hour, according to Tesla’s website.
In a June 5 report, local media outlet LatePost said that outside of CATL, BYD’s (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) battery manufacturing unit FinDreams had become a new cell supplier for Tesla’s energy storage business.
FinDreams would begin supplying Tesla with cells for energy storage in the first quarter of 2025, the report said.
