Radio-controlled aircraft have been around for decades, but what we think of as a modern drone started back with the unveiling of the Parrot Drone in 2010. Three years later, DJI introduced the Phantom to the mainstream, and now they’re a staple “science toy” every holiday season. There are some huge Cyber Monday drone deals, so you can have a mobile camera platform to capture your action sports adventures, film vacation scenery, or just spy on your neighbors. I’m joking; don’t spy on anyone with your drone, it’s wrong and illegal.
DJI is still the biggest name in drones. I understand if you think that sounds like a lot of money, it is. There are more consumer-oriented drones on the market that may not give you quite the cinematic results but will be just as satisfying to use. The Snaptain – P30 4K Drone with Camera GPS and Remote Controller for $179.99 is one of them. It won’t get you an Oscar, but it’ll be good enough for Instagram.
DJI does have so lower-end models, like the DJI – Avata Explorer Combo with Motion Controller, Goggles Integra and RC Motion 2 for $759.99. This meant as an introduction to FPV, First Person View flying, which is a whole different ball game if you’ve never tried it. The laws for operating drones are getting stricter all the time. Some of them will vary from state to state. I would recommend checking your local laws and ordinances and maybe looking into joining the AMA.
