BYD’s upcoming Seal model is seen as one of the strongest competitors to the Tesla Model 3, and now more information is becoming known.

The images released Tuesday by the largest new energy vehicle (NEV) maker show more details of the Seal, after a preview video and the first official images were released last month.

The Seal is based on the concept Ocean-X that BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY, HKG: 1211) unveiled at the launch of its e-platform 3.0 last September, and largely reflects the Ocean-X design language.

The BYD Seal as a whole has a sporty and youthful feel similar to that of the Tesla Model 3, and the ripple lights below the headlights make it recognizable.

Its run-through taillight also adopts BYD’s so-called ocean aesthetic design, like two water drops connected together.

Information recently released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed that the BYD Seal has a length, width and height of 4,800 mm, 1,875 mm and 1,460 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,920 mm.

For comparison, BYD’s flagship sedan Han EV has a length, width and height of 4,980 mm, 1,910 mm and 1,495 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,920 mm. The China-made Tesla Model 3 has a length, width and height of 4,694 mm, 1,850 mm and 1,443 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,875 mm.

BYD Seal will be available in three range versions with energy consumption as low as 12.6kWh/100km.

Its standard range model is equipped with a 150kW rear-mounted motor and has a maximum combined range of 550km.

Its long-range version is equipped with a 230kW rear-mounted electric motor and has a maximum combined range of 700km.

The top trim 4WD version of the model has a total front and rear motor power of 390kW, a maximum range of 650km and an acceleration time of 3.8 seconds from 0-100km/h.

BYD’s previously announced information showed that the Seal will have an integrated battery-body design, an eight-in-one electric powertrain and other new technologies.

The BYD Seal’s price range is expected to be in the range of RMB 220,000 ($34,710) – 280,000 and may be unveiled around the Beijing auto show, according to previous reports in the local media.

However, the Beijing auto show is currently postponed due to the Covid and a new date has not yet been set. It is unclear when BYD will officially launch the model.
