Solar panel maker Trina Solar says its cells have set world record for efficiency

Trina Solar said the cell has achieved an efficiency of 23.56 percent, setting a new world record for mass production efficiency of 210 large-area industrial P-type monocrystalline silicon PERCs.

Chinese solar panel maker Trina Solar said on August 16 that its in-house developed 210 mm x 210 mm high-efficiency PERCs has set a new world record for cell efficiency.

The company said the cell has been certified by China PV Test (CPVT), a third-party test, to achieve a cell efficiency of 23.56 percent, setting a new world record for mass production efficiency of 210 large-area industrial P-type monocrystalline silicon PERCs.

PERC is short for passivated emitter and rear cell, a structure of the cell, which originated in the 1980s.

The PERC cell structure was first officially published in 1989 by Martin Green’s research group at the University of New South Wales in Australia in the Applied Physics Letter, when it achieved a laboratory cell efficiency of 22.8 percent.

Trina Solar claims to have used production equipment at its 210-cell manufacturing site to achieve efficiencies in excess of 23.5 percent for large-area 210-cell batches in volume production.

This proves that high conversion efficiencies can be achieved through technological innovation, according to Chen Yifeng from Trina Solar’s technical engineering center, which is focused on bringing innovative technology results to manufacturing quickly to maintain performance leadership in mass production products.

A month ago, Trina Solar said its high-efficiency PERCs based on 66 210mm x 210mm cells were tested and certified by TÜV Rheinland and TÜV Nord, with a world record module window efficiency of 23.03 percent.
