Chinese tech giant Huawei disclosed a new patent for over-the-air (OTA) vehicle upgrades that could improve driving safety, according to data provider Qichacha.

The patent was filed on March 17, 2021, and was made public on August 10, 2021.

The patent abstract shows that it provides an upgrade service by delineating safe and dangerous areas to obtain information about the location of the vehicle to be upgraded during an over-the-air upgrade.

The patent can realize the control of the vehicle to be upgraded at the right location to ensure the safety of the upgrade and eliminate the hidden danger to its own safety and traffic safety, the patent abstract says.

Huawei has had a lot of action in the autonomous driving field in recent years and has disclosed a number of related patents.

Earlier this week, CnEVPost reported that Huawei recently disclosed a new automotive-related patent that provides a method for identifying the steering intent of a target vehicle, which can further determine its steering intent based on the target vehicle’s posture information.

The method helps to improve the accuracy of predicting the steering intention of the target vehicle and better assists in autonomous driving, thus improving the safety of self-driving vehicle driving, the patent abstract says

In addition, Huawei has recently disclosed a new automotive-related patent that provides a method for controlling the movement of vehicles involving artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, which can be applied to smart cars.

The vehicle in self-driving mode can acquire user commands, information about the surrounding environment, then understand them and generate self-driving control commands for the vehicle based on the user’s driving intentions.

This sounds a bit like the scenario in the decades-old American TV series Knight Rider, where the intelligent sports car named KITT is able to execute the voice commands of the protagonist.
